My thoughts on Anonymous

First off... FUCK ANONYMOUS. This isn't an ass kissing statement for there attacks on Scientology, I hate scientology as much as any other guy, but this is more. Its about the distinctions of virtual and real life. For what is virtual domain such as the web but a tool and emulator of real life. What we see as Anonymous today is a warning of things to come. Luckly the "face" of anonymous is rather kind in comparison, they don't want violence, they don't want hate. They just want freedom of press. What I see wrong with this, is the future of cyber terrorism for us ahead. To be anonmous is to be a coward. Not having an identity is to give up your will. And when you act without a will you are as brain washed as these scientologist. So I foresee a cult starting REALLY soon on the same level as scientology based around this. To be anonymous is to be everything, so power comes with it, but the distinction between you and the next person blurs, things you have in common aren't just in common but exactly the same. This is scary to me. I would rather stay my name but no one of us can face a power such as Anonymous. They are a fire and act wildly. The only morals them thinking whats right. My support of there attacks on scientology stands here, but what are they going to attack next? All I'm saying is...

FUCK ANONYMITY, STAND ON YOUR OWN FEET AND MORALS, AND DON'T BE A TOOL; RULE YOUR LIFE, THE POWER OF ONE CAN MATCH THE POWER OF THOUSANDS!

Anyway, that my whole take on this "war" going on.

My view is the antithesis. The reason for anonymity was a ploy to eschew lawsuits filed by the Church of Scientology; otherwise we would have proudly sported a name worthy of the cause. The whole movement is fueled by internet memes, even the name "Anonymous" itself being a placeholder name given to guest posters on message boards and the like.

We protesters are cultured, familiar with the most modern humor and references, so it's not surprising that we are rational human beings as well as politically motivated. Open your eyes to the simple observation that Scientology is an evil cult that takes over people's lives, swindling them out of large sums of money. Naturally, we want to do something to bring the issue to public consciousness and eventually to stop it entirely.

You are correct about one thing though, Daodos. Anonymous is the start of something big. But it is not a cult per se but proof of something astounding. The internet is not all talk, and chaotic packetized chatter can translate to tangible action. Until now, the best a netizen activist could hope for was media coverage, but that has all changed. A hypothetical group on Facebook entitled "Get out of Iraq NOW!" could by no stretch of imagination garner 10 million members, but that serves as nothing more than a an informal public opinion poll. Anonymous indicates that if a group such as this were to schedule a march on Washington as one of its events a substantial number of people would show up. But wave of change is glacial, and for now it is clear that the internet underground can be called to action, but it may be a while before the masses can organize through digital means. We are but a stepping stone in the evolution of the world and politics facilitated by instant telecommunication.

Someday, I hope that you will be proud to call yourself Anonymous. I know I do.

Let me rephrase

I not so much mean cult, I meant cult-culture. Like fans of a videogame, they become overly protective of a certain aspect leading to a pack like mentality. Now what Anons do is no means evil or wrong, I just feel like they are being undermined by dorks on the internet who see it as a joke. Anonymous itself does not joke. I am a supporter but choose to stay away from there light, yet if I were to ever join there ranks, you would never know. Never care, as I would be anonymous, which everyone is anonymous to a degree. I use a screen name. Taking the role of someone else on the internet. I can be mimicked, I can be hacked, but I have a name thats unique, yet hidden to a degree. In the basic form, I am anonymous, yet a non committed anonymous. Anonymous has taken steps since they've persecuted those who go against there cause. But scientology doesn't care. The whole aspect of anonymous is now, and always will be.

They are many, They are leigon, what ever it is they say insert here, expect them.

I embrace the idea, I'm just annoyed by the means it had to come. And don't be fooled. Even though Anonymous is made up of all kinds of people. All of them against scientology are geeks like me.

The geeks shall inherit the earth...

Re The Daodos discussion of the Anonymous movement

I agree with the general substance of your post. I would extend the concern that if people do not have to attach their identities to their political efforts, the anonymity can be used as a cover to commit grievous injustices. Our classic American example is the KKK. They were a homegrown terrorist organization dedicated to enforcing racial inequality for the purposes of their own economic gain. Their influence was massively diminished when a law was made requiring them to NOT always be masked. Freedom of speech comes with acknowledging that you are the one talking. The real danger to guard against would be criminal and disruptive forces using a similar organizing method.

Dissenting speech should not be suppressed, and even revolution has to remain an option if a government becomes an oligarchy. The problem is to differenciate that from self-serving trouble making.
